Course Title: Planning for a SMS On-Site Evaluation

Objective: This webinar focuses on the actions a worksite should take to prepare for a safety management system (SMS) on-site evaluation. This webinar describes the qualities of an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protections Programs (VPP) Star or DoD Service safety and occupational health (SOH) Star worksite and identifies tasks to complete prior to applying for SMS recognition or approval. This webinar also discusses how to coordinate the evaluation team’s arrival, organize the on-site evaluation activities, and prepare for the opening conference.

Pre-Requisites: This presentation is useful to any personnel involved in preparing for an on-site safety management system (SMS) evaluation. This presentation is most useful for worksites seeking Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star approval or DoD Service Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Star recognition. While not as applicable, much of the information may also be useful in preparing for American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Z-10, Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001, and other recognized SMS model audits. Attendees should have a basic understanding of hosting an on-site evaluation team prior to this webinar and will need to have a thorough understanding of their SMS requirements when preparing for the on-site evaluation. Personnel gaining the most benefit from this presentation may include: • SMS points of contact (POCs) • Safety and health (S&H) staff • Key personnel (e.g., supervisors and managers, emergency managers, training coordinators, industrial hygiene and occupational health staff) • S&H committee members
