Course Title: Overcoming a Plateau to Strengthen Your Star Quality

Course Type: Webinars

Objective: This webinar provides strategies for continuous improvement in a safety management system (SMS) – specifically, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protections Programs (VPP). It presents ideas to help maintain a proactive safety culture, managing stakeholder turnover, and develop an outreach program. It also discusses how to use your annual self-evaluation to capture SMS improvements. Finally, this webinar covers lessons learned and best practices from DoD sites successfully maintaining a level of excellence, and what they do to conquer the challenges of sustaining Star quality.

Pre-Requisites: This presentation is beneficial to personnel wanting to learn more about keeping your SMS alive, well, and vibrant after becoming an OSHA VPP Star site. Attendees should have an intermediate understanding of SMSs and sustainment prior to this webinar. Personnel gaining the most benefit from this presentation may include: Commanding Officers and Directors, Safety and Health (S&H) Staff, VPP Coordinators, Safety Committee Members, and Union Presidents & Representatives.

Ms. Gormish has been with the SMCX since 2012, supporting all DoD Services and Agencies. She also has experience conducting environmental, energy, and resource management projects for CTC clients.

Ms. Casper has been with the Safety Department of NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base since 2016. As the VPP Coordinator, she assists in ensuring compliance for the installation’s safety program through support in training and oversight.

Merrill E. Dickinson Jr., MSPH, CHMM, MCLB Albany, Installation Safety Manager

Mr. Dickinson has been a Civilian Marine safety professional since 1994. He is an active VPP Special Government Employee and VPP mentor. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals, Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals, and the National Eagle Scout Association.

Amy Johnson, Robins AFB 402 EMXG/MXDEOX, VPP Program Manager

Former Air Traffic Controller, former airport operations coordinator, and management analyst, Amy has a master’s degree in aeronautical science. She is now serving Robins Air Force Base as the VPP Program Manager for the 402 EMXG/MXDEOX.

Jerry Zeltner,  404th AFSBn Installation Maintenance Division, Joint Base Lewis McChord, VPP Chairperson and Collateral Duty Safety Officer

Jerry coordinates the VPP committee, annual VPP self- evaluations, and working with the safety professionals to resolve issues discovered during inspections, near misses, and hazards reported at the site.

Paul has been with the SMCX for over 10 years and supports both Army and Navy sites. He is a certified master trainer and has recently finished his master’s degree in leadership from Columbia Southern University.
